If the pandemic has had one silver lining, it's that movie fans have had a chance to revisit old favorites, rediscovering iconic characters, and bringing them back into the current cultural zeitgeist. From Adam Sandler's Billy Madison, to Will Ferrell's Anchorman, fans have found solace--and laughs--in their favorite comedies.
With the film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, starring Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, scheduled to release next month, production company Morgan Creek recently shared plans to resurrect Carrey's Ace Ventura:
“We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise - it’s noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamouring for a 3rd installment,” Morgan Creek said. “During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.”
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was released in 1994 and was a huge theatrical hit, catapulting Jim Carrey's career, and bringing a lesser-known Courteney Cox to the big screen as Ace's client and love interest. The sequel Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls followed quickly, releasing just a year later.
While the production is in its early stages, the plot can only be speculated, but it's safe to assume audiences will be treated to Carrey's own style of physical comedy, his outrageous wild animal calls, and of course, that iconic Ace Ventura pompadour.
