We're sure you've heard of the phrase, “dinner and a movie”. You go out to dinner, you go see a movie—it’s great. But do you know what it’s missing? Beer.
But not just any beer, oh no. Instead, enjoy a beer that is specifically paired with the movie that you’re going to watch. It’s like how nice restaurants pair wine with each course of your dinner, except here, we are pairing movies with beer.
So if you’re over 21, and want to crack open a cold one while watching your favorite flick, read on.
Jurassic Park & Porters
So you find yourself on an island with a bunch of dinosaurs. It’s all very cool and you are super excited to feed a goat to a dinosaur but wait...THEY ESCAPED? You may think you’re screwed, but that's actually the perfect time to have a refreshing porter! Porters are generally dark in color and can taste a bit like coffee, chocolate, or caramel. That delicious malty sweetness is sure to inspire you to get off your butt, escape the island, and crack open another!
Okay, we assume everyone knows that any film by Monty Python is best watched with a cold brew in hand, but Monty Python and The Holy Grail deserves an extra beverage to lift your spirits. Introducing Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale! That’s right, the U.K. based Black Sheep Brewery claims that their Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale is so legit that it’s even “tempered over burning witches.” The Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale is a light, golden beer with a fresh taste and crisp, bitter finish.
Unfortunately, Black Sheep Brewery doesn't ship to the US, so this one’s for all our UK friends!
Star Wars: A New Hope & Hops
Picture yourself sitting down to watch Star Wars for the 20,000th time. What’s in your hand? No, not the remote. What’s in your other hand?
A nice hoppy IPA that’s what!
Specifically, the Elysian Brewing Space Dust IPA is the perfect drink while watching Star Wars. Not only is it space-themed, it’s also incredibly delicious. Elysian Brewing is more well-known on the West Coast, but it can generally be found at any liquor store. It’s 8.2% ABV, so we would recommend resisting the urge to swing your lightsaber around while drinking, unless you really want to break your roommate’s favorite lamp (it’s happened to the best of us).
The Dark Knight & Dark Lagers
Some men just want to watch the world burn. And others just want a beer.
Any dark lager would go well with The Dark Knight, whether it's a classic Amber American Lager, an Oktoberfest, or even a Vienna Lager. Yet, the dark lager that goes best with The Dark Knight is a special dark beer that tastes surprisingly light!
The German Schwarzbier Dark Lager has hints of coffee and chocolate flavors. Despite its almost black appearance, this beer tastes less malty than expected. The Black Bavarian from Sprecher Brewing Company or Kostritzer Schwarzbier from Germany are great German Schwarzbiers to try at home to those extra dark ‘knight’ flavors.
It: Chapter 2 & Sours
The modern film adaptation of Stephen King’s It was an instant sensation. While sour beers are still working hard to become respected in the craft beer world, they are the perfect type of beer to have while watching It Chapter 2. Especially red sour beer (red balloon anyone?).
Sours combine the fun of drinking beer with the childlike love of sour candies like Sour Patch Kids and Warheads. If you are new to sours, we recommend trying Delirium Red—the mild taste of sour cherries and sweet flavors gives the beer a perfect balance between sweet and sour.
Parasite & Pilsners
Are you wondering why we chose such a light and refreshing beer for such a dark and twisted film? Well, our choice actually has to do with how a pilsner is made. Most craft brewers say that good pilsners are hard to brew and truly great pilsners can take a lot of time, precision, and attention to detail. Parasite director Bong Joon-Ho paid attention to every single detail to make an impeccable movie. Why not drink an impeccable beer while watching the greatness that is Parasite?
The Weihenstephaner Pilsner is one of our favorite classic pilsners because it is slightly bitter, but don’t just trust us—there are a wide variety of pilsners from all over the world just waiting for you to try them!
We like great movies and we like great beer. Over the years, we’ve found that the best way to discover new, fantastic beer is to go to your local breweries and try something out of your comfort zone. In a time of social distancing, many local breweries also deliver their brews right to your own home.
After all that writing we’re ready to throw on Star Wars, grab one of our favorite IPAs from the fridge and get watching!
