Disney rehires James Gunn for 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'
This past July, writer/director James Gunn found himself out of a job following tweets from a decade ago resurfacing.
The tweets, while in poor taste and offensive to some, didn’t merit the firing he received; this was at least the sentiment of the cast & crew of ‘Guardians’ who signed a joint-statement in support of him and urged Disney to reconsider their decision.
And, while some online did support the firing, many more backed Gunn.
Disney took a firm stance on their decision and while they planned to use the script he had written for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' - Gunn wrote & directed the first two ‘Guardians’ films - they were searching for a new director.
In the months to follow, cast members continued to publicly discuss their disappointment in Disney.
As recent as this year, some of the cast said they had no idea what was planned for the production that had been placed on pause.
At one point, actor Dave Bautista (who plays the character of Drax) threatened to leave the project all together if Gunn was not allowed to direct - a threat that may have been hard to follow through with due to contractual obligations.
Fortunately for Gunn, he still picked up some great work and even landed the writing position for the next ‘Suicide Squad’ film from Marvel superhero rivals DC.
Today, however, in a turn of events… the man responsible for the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film-franchise is back and he will be directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ - which was originally supposed to begin production this past February.
After several meetings with Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn, Horn decided to reverse the decision (a rare thing for Disney) after Gunn’s apologies and handling of the situation.
While some may be angered by the news, many more Marvel fans are expected to welcome his return with open arms as Gunn truly did bring a one-of-a-kind heart and vision to the ‘Guardians’ films.
