Disney reveals movie release schedule through 2027

May 7, 2019
With its recent acquisition of Fox (for a whopping $71.3 billion), Disney has had to rework its upcoming movie release schedule. From already completed projects to films that have yet to begin production - today, Disney gave a look of what is coming, when, and… what’s been axed - all the up to 2027. Scroll down to see the full list but here are a few highlights today’s announcement.
‘STAR WARS’. As we know, ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ [which hits theaters Dec. 20] is the end of the Skywalker era but, as expected, Disney already has a solid plan in place to carry on with one of the biggest franchises in film history.

Apart from their Galaxy’s Edge theme park at Disneyland - which opens later this month - a brand new trilogy is in the works [early reports say Rian Johnson has heavy involvement] that will begin hitting theaters Dec. 16, 2022 with the sequels dropping late 2024 & 2026. The ‘Star Wars’ release plan is a great segway into the upcoming - and long awaited - ‘Avatar’ releases, as Disney has created an annual alternating schedule for the franchises. ‘AVATAR’ In a November update, we learned the latest plan for the next four ‘Avatar’ sequels. The first two sequels were planned to release on Dec. 18, 2020 & Dec. 17, 2021 with films four & five of releasing sometime in 2024 & 2025. The release plan has now been delayed a bit and fits in perfect for the alternating schedule with ‘Star Wars’ with the first now coming out in Dec. 2021 followed by end-of-year releases in 2023, 2025 and 2027. ‘X-MEN’ Over the last year or so - ’The New Mutants’ has been pushed back numerous times and many speculated it would be completely cancelled after the merger but it looks like it will still see the light of day… just a littler later than its latest delay.

While the news several months ago pinned its release this August, it’s now listed as an April 3, 2020 release. It will be interesting if Disney takes this extra time to improve on the project - which has received a fair bit of negative publicity. ‘Gambit’ which stars Channing Tatum, is an X-Men spinoff that was plagued with delay after delay while under Fox’s ownership and it has now been wiped from the release calendar entirely. Many people are eager for more information on when Disney will be implementing X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was announced during the merger that Disney would be scrapping the latest Fox-created characters in preparations for their own MCU X-Men films (with the one exception being Ryan Reynolds staying on as Deadpool) and while we are still waiting on additional information, Disney has said to not expect any new X-Men films until 2021 at the earliest.
