The final season is here! For Game of Thones lovers worldwide, the end of this massive fantasy epic brings excitement tinged with the sadness of knowing it’s all ending.

So many questions remain to be answered, and few are bigger than that of who will defeat their rivals to sit on the Iron Throne and rule Westeros. We rank the top contenders from least likely to most.

5. Jon Snow:

Revealed (finally) in Season 7, Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and therefore the rightful heir to the throne under the original lineage. While this earns him a mention here, Jon has no idea of his heritage and has already pledged his loyalty to Danaerys – so him ruling could only happen if his lover / aunt Dany meets some shocking and horrible demise.

4. Danaerys Targaryen:

Prior to season 7, it seems like everything was moving inevitable towards Dany fulfilling her long held ambition of returning to Westeros to reclaim her family’s place as rules of the Seven Kingdoms. With a horde of united Dothraki, an army of Unsullied, 3 massive dragons, and a fleet of ships to carry them all – she sailed across the Narrow Sea with the wind at her back. A series of missteps and defeats in season 7, and the introduction of a new foe in form of an army of the dead, have weakened her position and reduced her dragon count by one.

3. Cersei Lannister:

A strong contender to sit on the throne as the current incumbent of the position. Cersei’s ruthlessness perhaps even exceeds that of her late father Tywin, and her brother Tyrion likes to lament that “Cersei always wins”. Her current plan relies on pitting her two greatest living enemies – the Starks and the Targaryens – against the White Walkers, and then mopping up whatever is left. She has experience in using Wildfire to destroy her enemies – but is that enough to stop the Night King?

2. The Night King:

With an army of undead and a team of white walkers than have shown their ability to slay dragons, and winter rolling ever further south, The Night King already seemed unstoppable. Now he has an undead zombie dragon, it’s hard to see how any regular army could defeat him. There is still a lot that we don’t know yet about the Night King – who was he originally, what does he want? There are sure to be some twists and surprise reveals to come on this front, which could be key to how or why he could end up being stopped.

1. Nobody:

“Valar Morghulis” – All Men Must Die. If there is one thing this show has taught us, it is to not expect a happy ending. With so many beloved characters having met sudden and grisly demises, it would be almost expected if the final season kills off many of the characters we have come to know and love? At this point, the odds of all of Westeros being obliterated like Old Valyria seem as good as any.

Who do you think will prevail? Let us know in the comments.
