Disney+ is giving Star Wars fans the perfect Christmas, uh, we mean Life Day present!
The upcoming special will pay homage to the 1978 original with a similar plot. However, it will (thankfully) be much shorter...and made out of Lego pieces. Taking place after The Rise of Skywalker, the 45 minute special will follow Rey, Poe, Rose, and Finn as they cross the galaxy to get Chewbacca back to Kashyyyk in time to celebrate Life Day with his family.
Executive producer Josh Rimes said to USA Today, “We wanted to give a wink and a nod to the original,” and took inspiration from classic holiday films like It’s A Wonderful Life and Christmas Vacation.
Be prepared to spot characters like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Emperor Palpatine, Vader, and Kylo Ren. “A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages,” said Rimes.
Rimes continued to say that “Life Day was an easy sell with Lego and Star Wars because it gives you the license to be a little more playful and comedic.” Fans of the original holiday special can only hope that the Lego version contains a few inside jokes as a reward for suffering through the original’s random sketches. Even though Diahann Carroll is an incredible singer, we DO NOT need to see Itchy plug into the Mind Evaporator ever again.😂
As George Lucas famously said, "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that special and smash it."
We’re hopeful the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is something truly enjoyable for the whole family. Grimes ended his talk with USA Today by saying, “It’ll bring a little joy to this world in this very, very crazy year we’re having.”
Mark November 18 on your calendars because that’s when Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is hitting Disney+!
