Disney has set sail with a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but it will not be a spin-off of the beloved Jack Sparrow series. Written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson and starring Margot Robbie, this film is rumored to focus on a whole new cast of characters.

While the plot is being kept under wraps since the film is still in early development, we do know that it will be a female-fronted movie. Some social media users have voiced their concerns, worrying that it might be a flop like the 2016 female reboot of Ghostbusters. Despite their hesitations, this Pirates film is in good hands with Hodson at the helm.

In addition to her work on Birds of Prey, Hodson also penned the Transformers spin-off, Bumblebee. She is working on the script for the upcoming The Flash film, as well as the much anticipated Batgirl.

Robbie has proven her ability to master a wide range of roles and most recently starred in the iconic role of Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey. Some of her other recent film credits include Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. DC fans can also look forward to seeing Robbie’s Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

While fans might hope for a guest appearance from Johnny Depp, it seems highly unlikely since Robbie’s Pirates film will not be a spin-off of the originals.
