Margot Robbie to play Barbie in live-action movie
Warner Bros. and toy company Mattel recently struck a deal and their first order of business is brining to life the most recognizable doll of all time; Barbie.
In September, Mattel launched their film company - Mattel Films - and this is their debut production.
It’s also been announced that Academy-award nominee Margot Robbie (‘I, Tonya’, ’Suicide Squad’) will be taking the title role and jumping on as a producer LuckyChap Entertainment.
In response to the announcement, Robbie stated:
“I'm so honored to take on this role that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children… Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president”.
In 2016, Sony announced a live-action Barbie film with Amy Schumer in the leading role.
Schumer unexpectedly dropped out of the project last year due to scheduling conflicts.
Anne Hathaway was then locked in as a replacement but also left the project reportedly due to the films release and shoot schedule being pushed back.
In October, Sony scrapped the project all together.
Third time's a charm!
In a time where kids are more interested in smartphones - and with the shutdown of Toys R’ Us - Mattel has been struggling in recent years and venturing into the film world might be exactly what they need to stay on their target demographics radar.
An official title, director and release date have yet to be revealed but how do you feel about this news?
