The upcoming The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run is skipping its theatrical release and will instead premiere on demand sometime in early 2021. Sponge on the Run was slated to premiere earlier this year on May 22, but was delayed until August 7th due to the coronavirus.

So why is Sponge on the Run now delayed until early 2021? Well, it’s all in an effort to promote Viacom’s CBS All Access streaming service.

After Sponge on the Run debuts on digital rental services like Prime Video, it will land on the ever-growing CBS All Access streaming service. Not only will CBS All Access have access to Sponge on the Run, it will also have ALL prior seasons of the ever-popular Spongebob Squarepants

The VP of Nickelodeon Animation Production and Development, Ramsey Naito, said, “We’re incredibly happy to give kids and families a much-deserved lift in any way we can, and the PVOD release of the new SpongeBob theatrical and putting all seasons of the TV series on CBS All Access are two of the best ways I can think of to get immersed in the optimism and joy that this terrific character represents.”

Are you bummed to have to wait even longer to digitally stream Sponge on the Run sometime in 2021? Will you subscribe to CBS All Access? Let us know in the comments!
