Top 5 Female Friendship Flicks

August 1, 2019

National Girlfriends Day is here and it’s time to celebrate with your best gal pals. Today is the day to remember all of the fantastic memories you have made together (and possibly make a few more!).

Whether they are your old college roommates or a group of gals you just met from work, it’s time to call them up and plan a day celebrating friendship and fun. You know that person who you don’t see very often, but when you’re together it’s like you have never been apart?

Celebrate National Girlfriends day by letting them know how much you care.

If you are still deciding the best way to celebrate with your girlfriends, I highly recommend watching any of these five female friendship flicks. Sit down, crack open that bottle of wine, and get ready to laugh (and cry) while watching these fantastic films.

'Sex and the City' aired on HBO from 1998-2004 and spawned two feature films

Sex and the City: Are you a fashion expert like Carrie or more traditional like Charlotte? Sitting down to watch Sex and the City with your girlfriends is great because it is both hilariously silly and deeply emotional. You see how this group of four friends overcome all obstacles by relying on their love for each other. Although all friendships have rough patches, you know that your best girlfriends will always be there for you. Like Carrie Bradshaw says, “Life doesn’t always turn out to be your fantasy, that’s why you need friendships to get you through it all.”

Girls Just Want to Have Fun: Cyndi Lauper gave us the musical hit and Sarah Jessica Parker gave us a great performance in this classic 1985 comedy. Motorcycles, nuns, big hair, and dancing: what more could you ask for in a film? If you and your friends are looking to watch something that throws you back to those classic 80’s tropes, and shows you more neon socks than you can count—this is the movie for you.

'Steel Magnolias' (1989)

Steel Magnolias: Steel Magnolias showcases the strength and beauty found in female friendships. When the group of lifelong friends witness the tragic death of one of their closest members, they have to find strength in each other to carry on. This 1989 film starring Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton remains well-known today for its incredible balance of drama and comedy. You may need a box of tissues nearby for this one.

A League of Their Own: Get to know the wonderful players of the Rockford Peaches in this baseball film set during World War II. Stellar acting from Madonna, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Tom Hanks, and more, all of whom bring something special to this unique comedy-drama. This is also the perfect film to watch if one of your favorite girlfriends is also your sister. The bond between the two sisters in this film is tested, yet remains strong by the love they share for each other and the love of their friends.

Watch if you Like: Great Acting, Sisterhood, Sports

Bridesmaids: A hilarious and sentimental romantic-comedy where two of the bride’s best friends compete in a funny-to-watch rivalry for her attention. Although the film does have a cute romance between Annie and Nathan, it is mostly about the lengths true friends will go to for the ones they love. Overall, I love Bridesmaids because it is a modern, easy-to-watch movie that always makes me laugh and remember great times with my girlfriends.
